CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami sent off its senior class in exciting fashion Sunday afternoon, toppling visiting Wake Forest 2-1 on Senior Day at Cobb Stadium.
Five Hurricanes donned the orange & green for the last match of their careers: forward Ashley Flinn, goalkeeper Emily Lillard, midfielder Erin McGovern, defender Maddie Simms and midfielder Jasmine VIllaverde. All five were in the starting lineup, with Villaverde making her season debut with the start.
Lillard was credited with the victory, while Flinn scored the match’s opening goal – the 18th of her impressive career. Simms and McGovern each played 90 minutes in the decision.
The match was the regular season finale for both teams.
“When we play great soccer, we accomplish a lot. We were really plugged in, excited and came to perform and put the ball in the back of the net today,” head coach Mary-Frances Monroe said after the win.
A 2013 All-ACC selection a year ago, Flinn had battled injuries this season and missed much of the year. She tallied her first goal of the year in the 58th minute, slotting home a rebound after her first shot was initially stopped by Wake Forest keeper Lindsay Preston.
“It felt good, especially to put us up and obviously to get a win for my other four seniors,” Flinn said.
Monroe said she was proud of Flinn, who served as one of three captains this season.
“She has been great. It’s a hard task to have when you’re coming into your senior season and as a junior you’re on the All-ACC team,” Monroe said. “I give her a lot of credit. She wanted to be on the field, she wanted to be the one scoring goals for us.”
Sophomore Gianna Dal Pozzo doubled Miami’s lead with a free kick goal in the 73rd minute. The goal – a spectacular strike from 20 yards out that beat Preston into the right side of the net – was the first of Dal Pozzo’s career.
