Preseason No. 8 Florida Soccer wins 2-1 over Troy in exhibition match

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Goals from a pair of Gator freshmen gave Florida a 2-1 win over Troy in a preseason match played Tuesday evening at the Florida Soccer Practice Field.

The match was played in three periods with minutes of 30-30-40.

The first score came in the 46th minute when Troy’s Alissa Jones put in a cross from Brooke McKee from 10 yards.

Florida tied the match in the 58th minute when Kristen Cardano sent a cross into the Troy box. Freshman Mayra Pelayo tapped in the ball from eight yards.

The go-ahead goal started when Pelayo took a shot which kicked off the crossbar. Freshman Alyssa Howell put in the deflection in the 72ndminute.

Burleigh Says:

“Tonight we saw a lot we can build on. There was some really good play and there were definitely things we could improve on.

“It was our first time playing 11v11 so there were some encouraging things and some areas we could get better at. That is certainly expected after a week of training so we are looking forward to getting back to work.” – Becky Burleigh, Florida head coach

Preseason Conference Votes:

Florida – The Gators are picked to win the Southeastern Conference.

Troy – The Trojans were picked to finish second in the Sun Belt Conference.


Florida is ranked No. 8 on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll.

Season Opener:

Florida will play host to FGCU on Saturday for the final exhibition match for both teams. Saturday’s exhibition is closed to the public.

Soccer is the first Florida team competing this season, as the Gators open the 2015 season on Friday, Aug. 21 at No. 17 UCF.  Match time is set for 8 p.m. at the UCF Soccer Complex.
