MIAMI (Sept. 10, 2015) – MIAMI (Sept. 10, 2015) – The FIU men’s soccer team (3-2-0) rallied from a 1-0 deficit by scoring three-straight goals to earn a 3-1 win over the Penn Quakers on Thursday night at the FIU Soccer Stadium.
Junior midfielder Darren Rios led the way for the Panthers, netting a career-high two goals and the first two for him since the 2013 season. Senior Daniel Gonzalez tallied the other goal for FIU, his second of the season, and had three points on the night as he had an assist as well.
Penn got on the board rather quickly, as Jerel Blades received a pass up the middle from Matt Poplawski, forcing a one-on-one breakaway to put the Quakers ahead 1-0 in the 12th minute.
Rios tied the match up just four minutes into the second half, as he knocked in his first goal of the season. Junior Jamar Campion-Hinds, who had two assists on the night, crossed the ball to the center of the box where Rios one-timed it to the side netting to knot the match up at one.
Rios’ second goal of the night came in the 63rd minute to put the Panthers ahead 2-1. Gonzalez had the initial shot that Penn keeper Ethan Mabourakh came out and made a save on, but the ball caromed out to Rios. From there, the junior buried it near post to give the Panthers the lead. Moments before the goal, senior Patrick Lopez made a nice tackle on a breakaway, which set up the counter attack.
Seven minutes later, FIU got on the board again, this time Gonzalez picking up two more points for the stat sheet as he scored his second goal of the 2015 campaign. Campion-Hinds got some space and raced up the sideline. From there, he crossed the ball into the box where he found a wide open Gonzalez who put it away, giving FIU a 3-1 advantage.
FIU is back in action this Saturday night, hosting the Princeton Tigers at 7 p.m…
