NORFOLK, Va. (Nov. 7, 2014) – A goal in the 87th minute by senior Quentin Albrecht forced overtime, but the FIU men’s soccer team (6-9-1, 2-6-0) ended its season with a tough, 3-2, double-overtime loss to the Old Dominion Monarchs on Friday night.
Senior Roberto Alterio netted a fast goal for the Panthers in the fifth minute, as a ball played into the box by sophomore Deshawon Nembhard connected with Alterio for his third goal of the season.
Following the reset, both teams battled to find an edge in possession. Just one shot in favor of the Monarchs was launched approaching the 18th minute. Old Dominion was able to find the equalizer in the 18th minute when Tyler Edwards fed Michael Nelson a ball in from the right side.
The Panthers almost buried the go-ahead goal in the 34th minute, first when junior Daniel Gonzalez had his shot saved by the Monarchs’ Alex Tiesenhausen. Albrecht gained control of the rebound, but a powerful blast from the Germany native’s right boot was blocked.
Old Dominion took advantage of another set piece score in the second half. With the clock nearing the 65th minute, Christian Schroeer took the kick and bent it into the far post untouched.
Albrecht became FIU’s 10th-highest points scorer in program with his match-tying goal in the 87th minute.
