WPSL’s Sunshine Conference kicks off play this weekend with four of it’s nine teams taking the pitch.
Newcomer Palm City FC hosts two matches at its home venue at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers. Treasure Coast Dynamites from Port St Lucie travel across the state for a 6pm game on Saturday May 30th and Florida Krush makes the trip down from Winter Park for their match on Sunday at 3pm. FC Surge of Miami makes the drive up I-95 to Treasure Coast on Sunday for a 4pm whistle.
The Sunshine Conference, one of the fastest growing groups in the league, now boasts 9 teams up from only 4 teams in the 2013 season. Co-Commissioners Luis Torres (Florida Sol) and Marge Perry (FC Surge) are excited for the growth of the league within Florida and have high hopes for a successful season.
The remaining 5 teams begin play next weekend June 6/7th (Florida Sol – Fleming Park, NTC Rush – Clermont, Pinellas County United – St Petersburg, Tampa Bay Hellenic – Tampa, and Team Boca Blast – Boca Raton).
Miami’s highest level of women’s amateur soccer, FC Surge, begin their 2015 season campaign with a trip up I-95 to face fellow Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) opponents Treasure Coast Dynamites. The match will be played at South County Stadium in Port St Lucie on Sunday, May 31, 2015 at 4:00pm.
FC Surge is in their 3rd season in the WPSL with the Dynamites starting their 2nd year. The WPSL is the largest women’s league in the country, with 83 teams across the U.S. and now also in Canada and Mexico; and has been in existence since 1998. The Surge play in the Sunshine Conference of the league along with the Dynamites, Florida Krush (Winter Park), Florida Sol (Jacksonville), NTC Rush (Clermont), Palm City FC (Ft Myers), Pinellas County United (St Petersburg), Tampa Bay Hellenic (Tampa), and Team Boca Blast (Boca Raton). The Sunshine Conference is part of the Southern Region and also includes the Southeast Conference (Alabama & Tennessee), and the Big Sky Conference (Texas, Oklahoma, Utah). All teams vying for a spot in the WPSL Championship Final Four Weekend, July 25-26 in Oklahoma City.
The Surge was formed in 2013 by four players who had met while competing in the WPSL for the Miami Kickers and then South Florida Strikers (both teams having later folded). President/CEO Rochelle Wimbush (Princeton), Director of Youth Development April Perry (FIU), Director of Sponsorships & Fundraising Elanna Brady (Barry University), and Director of Player & Staff Development Alexis Hernandez (Nova Southeastern University) saw the need for a team in South Florida where current and post grad college players could challenge themselves and play at a competitive level.
This year’s roster is led by Captains Wimbush and Perry. Also coming back for their 3rd season are Brady, Michaela Garcia (American University) and Rachael Reid (UNLV/Nova). Returning for a 2nd season are 2014 Captain Amanda Detterline (American University) and Gabi Sosa (FAU), and back from the 2013 squad Chrissy Gratz (East Carolina).
The Surge also boasts International flavor with newcomers Claire Emslie (FAU) from Scotland, Sofia Jakobsson (Barry) from Sweden, and Diana Kopiec from Poland.
Other new players are: Alex Cardenas (FAU), Ali DeVito (Darton), Megan Dias (Wayne State), Kelly Drozdowicz (UM Club), Samantha Engel (Daemen College), Jaime Gruber (Marshall), Nikki Haimes (Rollins), Chrissy Hy (Nova), Christina Medina (Johnson & Wales), Sara Mira (St Thomas University), Barbara Murillo (Kendall Soccer Club), Melony Poviones (St Thomas), and Johanna Rathbun (University of Tennessee – Martin).
Players range in age from 18 to 35 and the squad is made up of current college players maintaining game readiness during the summer off season, and post grad players wanting to continue to compete at the highest level. The Surge also has a reserve/training squad with Reena Boruk (Pace University commit), GG Annichiaricco (St Andrews University commit), Bailey DeVito (West Boca High/Weston Soccer Club), Shea O’Donnell, Yarisbeth Bradfield, and Cynthia Peretti.
The team is coached by Mario Garcia and Keith Heron. Marge Perry serves as General Manager.
North Miami Stadium (2555 NE 151 St, North Miami, Florida) will serve as the home venue for the Surge for the 2nd year.
Home games are scheduled for:
Saturday, June, 13th 3pm Saturday, June, 20th 7pm Tuesday, June, 30th 7pm
